Head Coach

Job Summary

The role of  Head Coach is an exciting and rare career opportunity for a candidate with the vision, experience, and energy to shape a forward-thinking and expansive community tennis programme.

Heading up a core team of 14 coaches and additional tennis assistants and volunteers, the Head Coach will be a prominent, visible presence around Hackney Tennis’s seven tennis venues and will forge strong relationships with players, coaches, parents, office staff and the local community. The Head Coach will have the ability and vision to embed best practice into all aspects of the tennis programme and will play a crucial role in achieving the goals set out in Hackney Tennis’s five-year strategy.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Managing Director, coaching team, and operations team in a supportive and rewarding environment.

Venue and Company description

  • We are one of the largest providers of tennis services in the South-East of England, managing 7 tennis venues and a total of 27 tennis courts across Hackney.
  • HT’s mission is ‘Tennis for Everyone’ and we aspire to give as many people as possible the opportunity to play tennis at all levels and enjoy the associated physical and mental health benefits.
  • HT operates an open booking system to all and has over 6,000 players booking courts each year. HT’s in-house coaching programme has over 80 coaching sessions per week and caters for all ages and abilities.
  • HT has over 20 teams (Juniors, Adults and Vet) competing in Summer and Winter Leagues and 230 players competing in its current singles league.
  • HT has an operations team, 14 coaches and a supportive and knowledgeable Board of Trustees. HT has a strong partnership with Hackney Council and an ambitious shared vision for tennis development in the borough.

Job duties and responsibilities

Head Coach Responsibilities:

Tennis Programme

  • Work closely with the Managing Director (LTA L5 coach James Mills) and HT team to forward plan, enhance and monitor all facets of Hackney Tennis’s community tennis programme (mini tennis, juniors, adults, performance, schools, disability & holiday camps)
  • Day-to-day management of the tennis programme
  • Deliver 20 hours of group coaching per week across the Hackney Tennis coaching programme.
  • 20 hours per week managing Hackney Tennis’s coaching programme, competitions programme and coaching team.
  • Organise tennis trips and excursions.

Coaching Team

  • Lead HT’s coaching team
  • Head up coaches’ meetings
  • Allocate coaches to courses and ensure quality delivery across the programme
  • Act as a mentor, providing professional development and support to less experienced coaches and assistants
  • Responsible for ordering equipment for the tennis programme and monitoring its storage
  • Assist with the recruitment and retention of coaches
  • Run tennis leaders’ courses


  • Competition calendar planning
  • Organise HT Championships, ‘Road to Wimbledon’ competition & schools’ competitions
  • Submission and oversight of National League teams
  • Attend adult team trials
  • Organise team captains’ meetings

Club Management

  • Attend Board meetings, AGM and any other meetings required by the Managing Director or Trustees
  • Meet weekly with Managing Director and Operations Manager
  • Contribute to the overall objectives of the club, as described in the five-year strategic plan and any subsequent updates.


  • Attend Open Days
  • Plan and oversee HT championship finals day
  • Attend any relevant HT Social Events
  • Any other duties within the scope of the post as may be required by the Managing Director or Board of Trustees

Candidate qualifications and skills

  • Accredited+ Level 5 or 4 coach (Highly experienced level 3 coaches willing to embark on their level 4 should also apply)
  • Proven and highly successful experience in tennis coaching, possessing the flair, initiative, and energy to take on this major role
  • Computer literate – competent in using Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Reliable, punctual & trustworthy
  • Experience delivering high quality tennis coaching to all ages and abilities
  • Able to work evenings and Saturdays (Sunday and Monday will be days off)
  • Experience coaching within schools and overseeing a school tennis programme
  • A collaborative team-player, capable, when necessary, of decisive management
  • Good playing standard
  • Strong work ethic and the ability to meet fluctuating workloads and pressure with a positive approach
  • Effective communicator – face-to-face, by telephone and email to people at all levels, both internally and externally with the ability to build and maintain excellent internal and external working relationships with a collaborative approach
  • Possessing expert knowledge, understanding and skills across the breadth of tennis, ensuring positive outcomes for players
  • Kind with absolute integrity
  • The ability to assist the Managing Director in marketing and public relations in all their facets by championing Hackney Tennis
  • A thorough understanding of safeguarding and child protection issues and a clear commitment to delivering best practice in Safeguarding
  • Have the skills to plan an inclusive and diverse tennis programme, valuing and promoting inclusion
  • Always striving to develop professionally


  • Salary £50,000-£55,000pa depending on experience and qualifications
